The Osterville Men’s Club is using its 60th anniversary this year not only as a reason to celebrate, but as cause to give back to the community.

“Sixty is a time in your life when you reflect back and it’s also a time to give back,” said club member Paul Ruane. He was one of four club members who collected a variety of new and used household goods, ranging from lamps to kitchen appliances to towels to bedsheets, which were donated to HAC’s Welcome Home Gift Basket program.

Ruane spearheaded the effort, filling up several truckloads of donations and delivering them to HAC with fellow club members Jim Ruane, Mike Ingham and Jack Mechem. The donations will go to HAC clients who are making the transition from shelter to permanent housing.

This spring, Paul Ruane said, the club also took time to support Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands Meals on Wheels program. And in October, they plan on volunteering a day to make small home improvements to a handful of homes for those in need in the community.

This September, they have invited HAC CEO Alisa Galazzi to speak to the club about the work the agency does.

Realtors Provide HAC Clients with Fresh Start

Welcome Home Edited.jpgHAC's Mary LeClair (from left) and Deanna Bussiere with Sunny Fellman, chair of the Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors Young Professionals Network which recently organized a drive for the agency's Welcome Home Gift Basket Program.

The start of the new year always represents a chance at a fresh beginning. And in January, the Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors provided HAC clients with just that when they donated six laundry baskets filled with a variety of basic home goods that will go to them when they make the transition from homelessness to permanent housing.

Since 2014, the association’s Young Professionals Network has spearheaded several drives in which they have collected a variety of household goods ranging from bath and kitchen towels to pots and pans to oven mitts to sponges to soap that provide our clients a solid foundation once they move into their new homes. The drives are tied to HAC’s Welcome Home Gift Basket Program.

In January, Sunny Fellman, chair of the Young Professionals Network, and Patricia Pry, sales and marketing director for the realtors association, dropped off the donations to HAC. “This is the right thing to do for our community,” Pry said of her organization’s involvement in these drives. “We want to keep this going, absolutely.”

Those interested in learning more about the gift basket program or donating to it, can contact Mary Everett-Patriquin at either volunteer@haconcapecod.org or at 508-771-5400, ext. 279.

Local Realtors Give Back to HAC

At the beginning of December, Angela Philbrook (left) and Kimberly Koplow of Cape Cod Title & Escrow delivered several bags of home goods to HAC. The items were collected last month by Philbrook at her 3rd Annual Friendsgiving party in which local realtors, mortgage lenders and friends were encouraged to bring donations to support HAC’s shelter clients.

Among the items collected were bath towels, cutting boards, kitchen cutlery and pans, all donations that will be given to HAC clients as part of its Welcome Home Gift Basket program. The program provides basic household items to shelter clients when they make the transition from shelter into permanent housing.

Those interested in donating to the Welcome Home Gift Basket program can contact Mary Everett-Patriquin at volunteer@haconcapecod.org or at 508-771-5400, ext. 279. HAC is currently in need of new twin and queen bed sheets, bath towels and dishware.

Cape Realtors Association Pays it Forward

Cape_and_Islands_Edited_9216.jpg Sunny Fellman, chair of the Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors Young Professionals Network, with the donations that her organization dropped off to HAC this month. They will eventually go to HAC clients who are transitioning out of shelter and into permanent housing.

By themselves, backpacks, clothes hangers, towels, kitchen utensils, pillows and notebooks are relatively ordinary, everyday items. But to a select group of HAC clients they will represent a way to move forward with their lives.

At the beginning of September, these were just a few of the new household goods that Patricia Pry, marketing director for the Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors, and Sunny Fellman, chair of the association’s Young Professionals Network, delivered to HAC.

The association collected the items as part of its latest drive for HAC’s Welcome Home Gift Basket Program. They will be given to families and individuals to help in their transition from shelter into permanent housing.

As part of the drive, Pry went to the Kmart in Hyannis to purchase some goods. While checking out, she struck up a conversation with a woman in line, explaining these items were going to HAC. That woman told Pry she had been a HAC client “and she may have been a recipient” of the Welcome Home Gift Basket Program, Pry said.

“We exchanged info and I had tears in my eyes,” Pry said. “It was a real pay it forward moment for me.”

“That is our ‘why’,” Fellman said, explaining why the association has conducted these drives in the past and will continue to do so in the future. “For us it is really touching to see the people benefitting from this.”

Cape Cod Realtors Help HAC Clients Get a Fresh Start

The most exciting moment for someone in shelter is when they move into permanent housing. But it can also be a scary moment as well.

HAC makes that transition a little easier thanks to its Welcome Home Gift Basket program, providing items – kitchen utensils, bath towels, bed sheets, pillow cases, dishes and more – necessary for any home.

In December, the program received a boost from the Young Professionals Network of the Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors (CCIAOR) which collected over a dozen laundry baskets full of home goods that will provide a solid foundation for HAC clients in their new homes.

“I receive the requests and I put everything together for the families,” volunteer coordinator Mary Everett-Patriquin told Sarah Lapsley, Greg Martin, Sunny Fellman and Patricia Pry of CCIAOR after they dropped off the donations at HAC the week of Christmas, noting the emotional connection to what the gift baskets will mean to those who receive them. “As I’m putting a basket together, I often find I need a tissue.”

Fellman, who serves as the chair of CCIAOR’s Young Professionals Network, said the program “fits in so well with what we do… We are just so excited being in this industry to be able to give back to local families on the Cape who are in need.”

Each quarter HAC teams up with a local business and holds a drive for basic home goods for clients making the transition from shelter to permanent housing.

Currently, the folks at Sullivan & Sullivan Auctioneers of Sandwich, will be collecting a variety of new household items (towels, silverware, canned goods, paper goods, blankets, cleaning supplies, toiletries, gift cards, hats, gloves, winter coats) that will be placed into Welcome Home Gift Baskets for our clients. The drive runs from March through Friday, April 3.

Those wanting to take part in the gift basket drive and give our clients a fresh start in their new homes can do so by bringing donations to:

Sullivan & Sullivan Auctioneers, LLC
148 Route 6A
Sandwich, MA 02563
Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm

In December, The Young Professionals Network, a subcommittee of the Cape Cod & Islands Association of Realtors, organized the inaugural drive as a way to show our shelter clients how much the community cares and wants them to succeed once they transition out of shelter.
